Overturned lorry shuts M20 in both directions near Aylesford

The M20[1] was shut in both directions near Aylesford on Thursday 24 because of an overturned lorry. Traffic was building on the motorway and the air ambulance had been called.

The incident was reported to have happened between Junction 4 for the A228 Castle Way (Leybourne/Snodland) and Junction 5 for Aylesford. It happened on the coast-bound carriageway, and London-bound traffic had been held for a few hours. The air ambulance was in attendance.

Travel service Inrix first reported the incident shortly before 1pm. It said: “M20 in both directions blocked, stationary traffic due to overturned lorry from J4 A228 Castle Way (Leybourne/Snodland) to J5 (Aylesford). On the coast-bound side, but also stopped London-bound awaiting an air ambulance.”

A spokesperson for Kent Police said: “Kent Police was called at 12.45pm on Thursday 24 August to a collision involving a lorry and a car on the eastbound carriage of the M20, between junctions 4 and 5. Officers, South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service are currently at the scene where both carriageways have been closed to traffic. Motorists are advised to consider alternative routes.”
