One taken to hospital after car towing caravan overturns on A19

One person has been taken to hospital after a car towing a caravan overturned on a busy North East A-road this afternoon.

Shortly after midday, Northumbria Police[1] received reports that a vehicle had overturned on the A19 northbound between the A690 and A183 turnoffs. Officers closed off one lane while dealing with the incident, while members of the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) also attended.

NEAS sent out a double crewed ambulance, two Hazardous Area Response Team members and a clinical team leader. One person was taken to Sunderland[2] Royal Hospital for further treatment.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police, said: "At around 12pm today (Friday) police received a report of an overturned vehicle towing a caravan on the A19 northbound at Sunderland, between the A690 and A183 junctions. Emergency services are currently attending the scene where one lane is closed."

A spokesperson for NEAS, added: "We were called to a road traffic collision today (4 August) shortly after 12pm on the A19 northbound. We dispatched one double crewed ambulance, two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and one clinical team leader.

"One patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital."

One remained closed for several hours, with delays of up to 30 minutes after the incident. Traffic was also slow in the opposite direction.
