Old Cambs pub on the edge of a roundabout could be turned into flats
The Railway Inn in Ramsey could be converted into flats under the latest plans for the former pub. The venue, on the corner of Great Whyte Road, has sat empty for a number of years after plans were approved to build six new homes around it.
These homes have now been built and new proposals have come forward to turn the pub itself into further homes. Plans had previously been approved in 2020 to convert the ground floor of the pub into a community centre, with office space on the first floor for start-up businesses, but this was not put into place.
Now a developer has submitted a planning application to Huntingdonshire District Council[1] to convert the building into four one-bedroom flats.
A community garden and cycle store have also been proposed as part of the conversion. The developer, Tristar Global Developments, said they recognised the former pub had a “prominent position” at the roundabout on a main road, and said they believed the changes would “improve the appearance of this section of the street scene”.
In planning documents submitted to the district council it said: “The applicant has considered how the development will ‘tie in’ with surrounding development. The original building will be virtually as is and very attractive landscaping already introduced to the six new build properties is to envelop the original building in respect of planting design and railings.
“Further, there will be six dedicated parking spaces and an abundance of additional parking is available within 200 metres.” Members of the public can submit their views on the plans to the district council through its online planning portal.[3]
