Mike Tindall’s new job ‘behind bars’ alongside England rugby legends

Gloucestershire’s Mike Tindall is set to tackle a different rugby-based challenge alongside some of his famous former team-mates – all for a new TV show. The 2003 Rugby World Cup winner and royal family[1] member is due to star in ITV’s new show Grand Slammers, which will see a group of England legends work with prisoners to form a team.

According to the Express[2], Tindall will be joined by ex-England stars Martin Johnson, Jonny Wilkinson, Lawrence Dallaglio, Phil Vickery, Jason Robinson, Will Greenwood, Ben Cohen and Matt Dawson. All featured in the 2003 team that brought home the Webb Ellis Cup[3] after beating Australia 20-17 in a tense final.

Over the course of two shows, Tindall[4] and his teammates will head to HMP The Mount in Hertfordshire, which is one of the very few English prisons to have a rugby pitch. They will then try to form a new team consisting of prisoners.

The training will build up towards taking on an Australian team in a big match. The series will air during the 2023 Rugby World Cup, which is due to kick off next month and is airing on ITV.

The broadcaster described the show as “a vivid insight into the power of sport to change lives as the England legends open up to inmates about how rugby had a profound impact on them during formative periods and gave them a purpose in life”.

Tindall – who is married to Princess Anne’s daughter Zara – has become a popular face on TV screens in recent years. He featured heavily during big royal occasions including the Platinum Jubilee Weekend and Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral last year along with King Charles III’s coronation a few months ago.

He also entered the I’m A Celebrity jungle last year, proving to be a hit with viewers as he finished fourth behind Matt Hancock, Owen Warner and Jill Scott.
