Man’s paddle board ‘kept blowing away’ after falling into water
Families watched on in horror as a paddle board “kept blowing away” after a man fell in the water.
Emergency services rushed to Marine Lake at around 4.50pm on Friday, August 11 following reports of a concern for safety of a man. The lake is next to Crosby Lakeside Adventure centre and Lakeside restaurant complex.
Merseyside police, fire crews and search and rescue were all called to the scene and an air ambulance and a coastguard helicopter were also seen as searches continued into the evening. One eyewitness previously said[1] she heard people “screaming” and “calling for help”.
Families visiting the area on Friday told the ECHO[3] they saw a paddleboard “floating” as they believe the man was trying to go after it. Despite best efforts from the public to help him, eyewitnesses said he “vanished”.
One person said: “It was awful. My tummy still feels sick over it now. Just waiting to hear some sort of update somehow. We literally was trying our best to see if we could spot him in the water but at the same time keeping an eye on the girls.
“His board floated over to us. We didn’t know it was his at first and through it was a bit strange. So, so sad. Just hope to god they find him for all his family’s sake.”
Another added: “He was trying to go after the board but it kept blowing further away, he tried to swim back but just vanished. That lake needs manning.
“People did attempt to go to him but after he went down there was no visible point for them to swim too, it was awful.”
On Friday evening, police confirmed to incident they were attending was ongoing as a boat searched into the night. Large parts of Crosby beach and the area close to the lake were cordoned off as people were urged to avoid the area.
