Man wowed after spotting dolphins in River Tamar

Dolphins made an incredible appearance in the River Tamar earlier this week, leaving a local man in awe. Jason Ward was sailing on the river after leaving Saltash Pontoon when he saw the incredible sight.

Jason, a former skipper, said he left the pontoon around 7.20pm by boat and he was left "amazed" when the majestic creatures came to the surface and appeared to put on a friendly display.

He said the appearance was near to the Tamar River Sailing Club and he managed to capture it on camera, which can be viewed at the top of this article.

Jason said: "It was an amazing sight. I left the saltash pontoon at 7.20pm by boat and I saw them just up from the Tamar River Sailing Club.

"I was very shocked to see them this far up the river. I was amazed. My job five years ago was a skipper working on the breakwater wall doing maintenance. We often saw them, but never this far up the river."

In August last year, a local woman was awestruck by a pod of dolphins and a whale off Rame Head[1]. With thunderstorms expected over the coming days, many are taking full advantage of the scorching weather before the weather turns - for some it’s a chance to enjoy local sea life.

The amazing footage, which can be seen above, was taken from a boat sailing between Rame and Downderry. It shows dolphins jumping in and out of the water.

Towards the end of the video you can see the friendly pod swimming up to the boat. The video also shows a large whale, spotted on the same boat trip.
