An Essex Police spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a collision on the M25, the Mardyke Junction close to  Aveley, at about 10.25am.

“Two lorries appear to have been involved in a collision, blocking part of the roundabout and affecting the surrounding slip roads.

“One person appears to have sustained life-changing injuries and has been taken to hospital.

“We are at the scene on the roundabout and disruption is expected for some time.”

Two lanes remain blocked at the time of writing with severe delays in Thurrock due to recovery work after the incident.

Drivers were warned to find alternative routes as they faced a 50-minute delay on approach with four miles of congestion.
