Live updates as Chatham power cut leaves 180 homes without …

There are 180 homes still without power in Chatham[1] today (August 10) after reports of electrical boxes smoking inside several houses on Tuesday afternoon. Engineers from UK Power Networks continue to work to bring power back to the remaining affected properties in the Wayfield Road area.

Emergency services including Kent Fire and Rescue Service[2] (KRFS) and Kent Police[3] have been dealing with the issue. KFRS deployed seven fire engines to the scene on Tuesday and extinguished a fire at one property in Wayfield Road.

Crews also carried out safety checks at affected properties in Churchill Avenue, Montgomery Avenue and Cunningham Crescent. No injuries have been reported and the cause of the blaze is not yet known.

Three days on, an update issued by UK Power Networks this morning states: “Engineers have safely restored power to a further 120 properties overnight where access was granted, engineers are back on site early this morning to seek access to the remaining 180 properties in Wayfield Road area of Chatham. We expect all but a few of these customers to be restored today, however access to these homes is paramount.

“Teams have worked hard helping those affected, particularly vulnerable customers, supporting them with food and accommodation as needed. We’ve made welfare facilities available on site including hot food and drinks, and temporary phone charging facilities and wifi for all. Our customer support vehicle and advisors remain on site to help residents and vulnerable customers and keep them updated.”
