Jonathan Van-Tam takes new job at vaccine manufacturer Moderna

Former Deputy Chief Medical Officer Sir Jonathan Van-Tam has a new role with vaccine manufacturing company Moderna. He left government in 2022 after playing a leading role during the UK's handling of coronavirus[1] and has since been chosen as the next chairman[2] of the Lincolnshire Football Association.
In 2021, Sir Jonathan was awarded a Doctor of Science by the University of Lincoln[3] in recognition of his contribution to public health. Official filings now show that Professor Van-Tam has joined Moderna as a senior medical consultant, reports Nottinghamshire Live[4].
The new role comes despite the fact that Professor Van-Tam was a member of the Vaccine Taskforce during the pandemic, which made decisions on all vaccine supply contracts and investments. But in terms of concerns over conflicts of interest, Professor Van-Tam will not be able to lobby the Government until March 2024 and is not supposed to use Government information to further his own business interests.

His consulting role is focused on the whole business, rather than on its vaccines specifically. The Moderna vaccine against coronavirus was approved for UK use in January 2021.
An initial 17 million doses were purchased, compared with 100 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab and 40 million doses of the Pfizer version.
