Investigation update after death of worker at Bramley Moore Dock
An investigation is ongoing after a construction worker died in an incident at Bramley Moore Dock.
Michael Jones, 26, from Kirkby died following an accident at the construction site of Everton's new stadium yesterday.[1]
Michael, who was a lifelong Evertonian, was rushed to Aintree hospital with severe head injuries but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. A post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death is due to take place tomorrow, according to officers.
Earlier today, Michael's family released a statement[3] in which they said he was "so happy" to be working on the new stadium. They added: "The family would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support. It is with our greatest sadness that our beloved son, brother uncle and friend Michael has sadly passed away."
Work has been suspended on the stadium project while investigations into what happened take place.
In an updated statement today, the Health and Safety Executive said: "We are onsite and assisting Merseyside Police with its investigation.”
Yesterday Laing O'Rourke, the principle contractor on the stadium project confirmed that one of its team members had been killed following the incident.
A spokesperson said: "We can confirm that earlier today a member of our team, who was carrying out work for one of our sub-contractors, was seriously injured in an incident. He was taken to hospital via ambulance, where he sadly died.
"We are shocked and saddened by today’s tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased man and our wider project team.
"The police and the Health and Safety Executive are on site and we have suspended work until further notice. We will cooperate fully with any investigation that follows.”
Everton Football Club also released a statement, which said: "Everyone at Everton Football Club is heartbroken by the news a male worker has died following an incident at the Everton Stadium site at Bramley-Moore Dock. The thoughts and condolences of everyone connected with Everton are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this unimaginably sad time.
