‘I’m sorry’ – ‘Silly’ drink-driver cuts up police at 12.30am

Drink-driver Ujarurapo Kukuuai has been banned from the roads for 17 months. The 30-year-old was stopped by police in Hanley[1] in the early hours of the morning.

He failed a roadside breath test and was taken to custody where he was breathalysed and gave a reading of 60 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - against the legal limit of 35. North Staffordshire Justice Centre[2] heard that the blue Volkswagen Jetta had been pulled over in Victoria Square at 12.30am on July 11.

Prosecutor Clare McGowan said: "He cut across the police who stopped him. He admitted drinking some alcohol. He failed a roadside breath test."

Kukuuai, formerly of Bemersley Road, Ball Green[3], pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

Representing himself, Kukuuai, who has no previous convictions, said he was driving his friend's car.

He added: "I was so silly. I am sorry. I had too much to drink."

Magistrates fined Kukuuai £120 and ordered him to pay £135 costs and a £48 surcharge. His ban will be reduced by 17 weeks if he completes a drink-drivers' rehabilitation course.
