Huge 40-mile diversion route for A417 two-mile overnight closure

Motorists will be signposted to follow a massive 40-mile diversion taking them into a neighbouring county when a two mile stretch of road north of Gloucester is closed overnight this week. A stretch of the A417[1] in Hartpury will be shut from 8pm to 7am from Wednesday, August 16 to Friday, August 18.

The work is described as for 'road safety improvements[2]' and for 'lining works'. Motorists are told the road will be temporarily closed from Moorend Road to its junction with Ashleworth Lane for about 3.3km.

Drivers have been told there will be no stopping or waiting permitted throughout the duration of the works. Emergency access[3] and pedestrian access will be maintained.

The official diversion would take motorists along the A40 to the edge of Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire and then up to the south of Ledbury on the A449 Ross Road before back onto the A417 Gloucester Road. The rough distance of this official diversion is 40 miles.

As always with official diversions, the route is suitable for all vehicles that would use the closed road. Where drivers know other local routes, the risk is with them.
