Glasgow councillor issues update on year-long Shield Road repairs

The Glasgow Times previously reported that the Southside street would be closed for a year, to allow for a Network Rail bridge to be demolished and rebuilt near the road.

The street will be completely locked down from St Andrews Drive and Scotland Street between 00.01am on Monday, August 28, 2023 and 10pm on Friday, August 30, 2024.

Now, Councillor Jon Molyneux has taken to Facebook after meeting up with Network Rail and Glasgow City Council on-site.

Councillor Molyneux revealed that specialist contractors have been brought into the project following the discovery of a number of needles, Glasgow City Council[1] are looking at footway surfacing, lighting and vegetation and that ‘redundant’ traffic signals are being removed.

He wrote: “This afternoon I met on-site with Network Rail and GCC to discuss issues that have been raised with me about pedestrian and cycle access and personal safety.

“Access is going to be restricted to just the west side of the bridge just now as they are about to begin taking down sections of wall on the east side to begin the formation of temporary bridges. Once the bridge is opened, access will be only on the east side.

“The compound will be brought solely into the road area (so there will be no heras fencing on the footway) to maximise the width of the footway as soon as the red and white kerbing is removed.

“That work was started today but there have been a number of needles found which now means specialist contractors have to be brought in to clear those.

“GCC is going to look at footway surfacing, lighting and vegetation. There may be some constraints on how much vegetation can be removed in terms of access.

“I’ve asked Network Rail if the size of the compound can be reduced, either by moving car parking to the SPT park and ride or by using the vacant Arnold Clark site.

“I think the cycle dismount section is currently too long and it would likely have better adherence if the signage was moved up to the point at which users do come into conflict. GCC is also going to review the signage.

“Redundant traffic signal phases on either approach are also due to be removed.

“I’ll update further as I’m able below.”
