Families demand speed bumps as police target rat-run
Families are calling for speed bumps on their rat-run street. They want the traffic-calming measures on the access-only Dean Hollow, in Audley[1].
It comes as Staffordshire Police[2] are cracking down on motorists ignoring the access-only restriction on the one-way street to get to businesses on nearby Church Street. Police are also targeting vehicles parking on the zig-zag markings on Church Street.
Dean Hollow resident Robert Leigh said: “The access-only restriction has never meant anything, people just ignore it. I think people break the law if they think they are not going to get caught and I don’t think anyone is going to get caught.
“It is the speed at which they come up here really, there are old folks’ bungalows and no pavements. Speed bumps would be the answer but apparently we can’t have them because of the expense.”
According to the Highway Code, motorists should only travel along Dean Hollow if they have a ‘genuine need’.
Neighbour Mark Hill, aged 78, added: “It is used as a short-cut and some of the drivers fly through, it’s ridiculous, it’s like a race track. I’m frightened to death that one day a car will come flying down here and a kid will get hit, it’s crazy. I wish they would put speed bumps in because at least that would be a deterrent.”
Police carried out their latest operation earlier this month.
A police spokesman said: “Police were in the area monitoring the situation and offering advice to motorists who contravened the regulations. Officers have been actioning complaints from residents regarding zig-zag parking on Church Street and motorists using the access-only Dean Hollow as a cut-through.
“Drivers were stopped, directed away, and given positive advice around this matter, with further action taken when necessary. We will continue to proactively listen to residents’ concerns and action these appropriately.”
