Exact dates A417 key roadworks will cause closures and diversions

Motorists in Gloucestershire will get a first proper taste of some of the disruption to come as significant roadworks are due to begin on creating a new A417 bypass[1] to replace the notorious missing link section at Birdlip. Early preparatory work has been going on for a while, but some major closures are to start later this month and into the autumn.

These works will include full overnight closure[2] of the A417 Brockworth Bypass from the junction with the A46 Shurdington Road to the Air Balloon roundabout for road widening. This will eventully see a third ‘crawler lane’[3] for HGVs constructed going up the steep Crickley Hill section.

There will also be closures linked to creating access road at a site opposite Leckhampton Hill.[4] National Highways had said work on building the bypass would begin in autumn 2023 with a completion date of early 2027 for the new road 3.4mile road – designed to improve links between the M5 in Gloucestershire and the M4 at Swindon, Wiltshire.

Much of the road works will be ‘off network’ as the new road is built on land between the Air Balloon and Cowley roundabouts. But changes will need to be made to the existing A417.

The National Highways[6] road project is designed to reduce congestion and collisions on the notorious single-carriageway stretch from the Air Balloon roundabout to the Cowley roundabout. This is the only stretch of single carriageway on the a417/A417 strategic route between the M4 and M5.
