Everything we know so far as search for man in water continues

The search for a man in Marine Lake continues into a fourth day.[1]

On Friday, August 11, Merseyside police received reports of a concern for safety of a man in Marine Lake, in Waterloo[2], at around 4.50pm. A coastguard helicopter was then spotted circling above Marine Lake which is next to Crosby[3] Lakeside Adventure centre and Lakeside restaurant complex.

A cordon was quickly put in place and police restricted access to the waterfront.[4] A large section of the marina, including a children’s fairground and walking paths were also closed by emergency services.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson previously told the ECHO: “Emergency services remain at the Marine Lake, in Waterloo, this morning following a concern for safety of a man first reported yesterday afternoon, Friday, August 11. We received a report at around 4.30pm that a man had got into difficulty while on a paddleboard on the lake.

“A search is ongoing and a large cordon remains in place surrounding the lake. People are asked to avoid the area at this time and we thank you for your patience.”

Today on Monday, August 14, Crosby[6] Lakeside Adventure centre has told the ECHO that the lake remains closed. All lakeside activities are currently suspended but the leisure centre and gym classes remain open and accessible to members.

Witnesses told the ECHO that they watched in horror as the paddle board “kept blowing away” after the man fell in the water. Another added she heard people “screaming” and “calling for help”.

One person said: “It was awful. My tummy still feels sick over it now. Just waiting to hear some sort of update somehow. We literally was trying our best to see if we could spot him in the water but at the same time keeping an eye on the girls.

“His board floated over to us. We didn’t know it was his at first and through it was a bit strange. So, so sad. Just hope to god they find him for all his family’s sake.”

Another added: “He was trying to go after the board but it kept blowing further away, he tried to swim back but just vanished. That lake needs manning.

“People did attempt to go to him but after he went down there was no visible point for them to swim too, it was awful.”
