Dozens of firefighters from across Essex are working to tackle a scrapyard fire that has engulfed hundreds of cars. Around 60 firefighters from across the county are at the scene on Purdeys Way, Rochford.
Firefighters were called to the blaze shortly after 9pm on Friday night (August 11). The scrapyard is reported to have around 2,000 cars on site – with Essex County and Fire and Rescue Service[1] saying around 200 are believed to be affected by the fire..
At around 11.20pm the fire service said it had the blaze under control. An investigation into the cause of the fire is set to be carried out when it is safe.

A fire service spokesperson said: “There are currently around 60 firefighters at the scene tacking the fire. Nearby residents are being advised to close their windows. The cars are stacked in rows of three storeys. Firefighters have the fire contained and have created a fire break to stop the fire spreading to the remaining cars.
“There is approximately 2, 000 cars at the site. An investigation to find the cause of the fire will begin once safe to do so.”
