East Lothian firefighters return to huge blaze at landfill site as smoke …

Fire crews battled a huge blaze at an East Lothian[1] landfill site overnight, as residents[2] in the area saw smoke from miles away.

The initial reports were made to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service[3] (SFRS) at around 1.40pm on Monday. At 8am on Tuesday, firefighters were back on the scene.

The SFRS confirmed two appliances were at Dunbar Landfill Site, and would be there until the area was made safe.

Three appliances were on the scene during the height of the fire. On Monday, an SFRS spokesperson said: "We received the call at around 1.40pm this afternoon and the fire is still smouldering but crews have just stood down.

""They will return during daylight. There were three appliances present during the height of the fire."

Dunbar Landfill Site was once operated by Viridor, though was sold to Valencia Waste Management in April 2022.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue service told Edinburgh Live on Tuesday morning: " Two appliances are at the scene, involved in dampening. Our crews will remain on scene until the area is made safe."
