Dry cleaners destroyed after gas metre bursts into flames

An Essex dry cleaners has suffered significant damage after a fire swept through it. Fire crews rushed to the Stanway estate in Colchester[1] late on Tuesday (August 15) following reports of a fire.

Crews from Colchester and Grays attended the scene on Blackberry Road. On their arrival, they found the building and its contents up in flames.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service managed to extinguish the fire very quickly and stop it from spreading to nearby buildings, including adjoined businesses and flats in the terrace. The dry cleaners suffered significant damage and the flat above suffered some smoke damage.

Photos shared by the fire service[3] show the remains of the dry cleaners. A large number of items can be seen as having melted to the ground due to the severe fire.

After an investigation into the fire was carried out, a spokesperson for the fire service said: “The cause of the fire was found to be accidental, due to the internal gas metre igniting.”
