Driver taken to hospital after lorry overturns on M2

The driver of a lorry that overturned on the M2 near Sittingbourne[1] has been taken to hospital. The incident occurred on the slip road of the coast-bound carriageway at Junction 5 for the A249/Stockbury Roundabout this morning (August 24).

The M2 coast-bound exit slip road has remained shut since. Motorists have faced heavy traffic and substantial delays[2] of around 20 minutes as a result of the ongoing closure.

A “complex recovery operation” has been ongoing throughout the morning. An earlier Twitter update from National Highways stated: “The M2 J5 (Stockbury) east-bound exit is CLOSED due to an overturned lorry.

“A complex recovery operation will be ongoing throughout the morning. There’s a 20 minute delay on approach so please allow extra time for your journey.”

A spokesperson for Kent Police said: “Officers and paramedics attended the scene and the driver was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. Highways officers also attended and are arranging for recovery of the vehicle.”

The recovery works are ongoing and the exit slip road closure remains in place at the time of writing. Get the latest updates to this ongoing incident with our live blog here[4].
