Crash carnage as four people are killed on Scotland’s roads in just …

Four people have been killed on Scotland’s roads[1] in just 24 hours. Three of the victims were motorcyclists killed in two separate accidents whilst a pedestrian also died in another crash.

In one incident, two pensioners died when the motorbike they were riding collided with another machine in Fife[2]. Both of the deceased, a 72-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman had been on a red Honda WM.

It was involved in an accident with a black Yamaha Custom V Twin. The elderly man died at the scene and his female companion died later at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee[3]. The rider of the Yamaha, a man aged 62, was also taken to Ninewells Hospital where he is in a critical condition.

The crash happened on the A914 between Balmullo and Dairsie on Monday, at 12.40pm. It occurred around 1.5 miles north of the junction with the A91.

Inspector James Henry of Police Scotland said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who died and our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area and saw what happened, or the motorcycles involved prior to the crash, to get in touch as your information could be vital. We are also asking anyone with dashcam footage that could help with our investigation into the crash to make contact with officers.”

Nine hours later, another accident saw a third motorcylist killed. The 43-year-old man was riding a blue Suzuki GSXR when it crashed in West Lothian[5]. It happened on the B792 Blackburn Road in Addiewell on Monday just before 9.30pm but did not involve any other vehicles.

Bus driver left in critical condition

Also on Monday, two men suffered serious injuries after a van was involved in a crash with a bus. It happened on the A77 in Ayrshire[6] near to its junction with the A719 road at Galston around 5.30pm.

The 23-year-old driver of the bus single decker Stagecoach was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he is said to be in a critical condition.

The 42-year-old van driver is described as being “serious but stable” in the same hospital. Two passengers on the bus, a 68-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man, were also taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution but were later discharged.

Meanwhile, emergency services were called to a four-car collision on a busy road in Fife on Tuesday morning. It happened on the A92, near Thornton Road, Kirkcaldy just after 8am. The conditions of those involved is not known.

Three hours later on Orkney[7], three people were hospitalised after a crash on the A961, three miles south of St Margaret’s Hope, South Ronaldsay, at around 11.15am.

Two of them were taken to hospital in Aberdeen by helicopter whilst a third was taken to Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall by ambulance. Their conditions remain unknown.
