Council warns roads will be busy as Reading station closed on …

Reading Borough Council has warned that roads across the town will be very busy on Saturday night (August 26). This comes as a result of Reading Festival and the closure of Reading[1] station due to rail strikes.

Thousands of people will continue to descend on the town this weekend for Reading Festival[2] 2023 and while many festival-goers will camp on-site, an estimated 20,000 people have purchased day tickets for each day of the festival. On Saturday, industrial action by members of The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) means the station will close from 7pm until 7am on Sunday (August 27).

With no trains taking people home, Reading Council expects roads to be busier. Those attending the festival should plan ahead to ensure they are able to get home safely and without disruption.

For those who will be heading home on Saturday night, the council has urged them to use the correct pick-up and drop-off point provided. Hills Meadow car park, near Christchurch Meadow, is the only area to pick people up and can be found on satnavs using the postcode, RG4 8DH.

Those who are driving have also been warned that there will be a no-stop traffic[4] management system in place along Richfield Avenue. A taxi rank will be operating on Tessa Road, just off Richfield Avenue.

The council has also told residents that they can expect some disruption over the course of the weekend. While significant disruption will have occurred on Thursday (August 24) when most attendees arrived, shops and supermarkets will likely remain busier throughout the weekend.

Roads will again become busier on Monday morning as thousands of people leave the town. On bank holiday Monday, the Napier Road - Vastern Road roundabout is expected to be particularly busy and further traffic management measures will be utilised if required.
