Cook crash in Bishop’s Stortford: Recovery vehicle driver arrested …
A woman was taken to hospital after being seriously injured and trapped when a recovery vehicle crashed into the shop window of Cook in Bishop’s Stortford town centre on Saturday morning.
The woman, a young member of staff, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where she has undergone assessment and treatment of her injuries.
A man was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by careless driving.
The incident happened in North Street at about 10am. All three emergency services were at the scene. Police said the road was expected to be closed “for some time” and advised people to avoid the area.
The recovery vehicle was parked at the entrance to White Horse Court, behind Pizza Express, when it rolled down the slope, across North Street and into the window to the right of the entrance to Cook, sending freezers of food crashing towards the counter, trapping a worker.
Her sister said on Facebook: “The truck... rolled down the little entrance by the side of Pizza Express into the window of the shop, smashing through the glass into the counter where my sister was standing.
“It crushed into her sides as she turned to possibly get away I think. She is at Addenbrooke’s Hospital getting a full body scan/X-ray.”
A spokesman for Hertfordshire police said: “We received a report shortly after 10am that a truck had collided with the front of a shop in North Street. Officers attended immediately, along with ambulance, fire and air ambulance services.
“There was one female casualty who was present in the shop at the time. She has been taken to hospital and is currently in a stable condition.
“A male has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by driving without due care.”
In July 2021, two people were injured when a blue Skoda smashed through the front of Eat 17 in Potter Street. The car rolled down Church Street and straight into the seating area window next to Petrucci's pizza counter just before 4pm on a Thursday afternoon.
