Clean up’ started after police move travellers on from park
A ‘clean up’ has started after police move travellers on from a Weston-super-Mare[1] park. The group set up a camp at Jubilee Park at Colombo Crescent on Saturday, August 5.
North Somerset[2] Council officials visited the site on Monday, August 7 to conduct health and welfare checks, and informed the group they needed to leave by noon on Tuesday. A tweet from Avon and Somerset Police North Somerset branch has since confirmed they have left the park.
A council spokesperson said there were eleven vehicles at the site, with local residents claiming the group had blocked off cycle paths. Concerns were raised by Weston residents about bags of rubbish which they say were thrown into hedges and the condition the park will be left in after being driven on in wet coditions.
Avon and Somerset Police[4] said in a statement: “Today, Police have attended Jubilee Park and issued the travellers on site a notice to leave. The travellers left the park without any further issues.
“The Police have worked with North Somerset Council[5] to secure and clean up the park, ready for local residents to use again.”
The park, which is popular with families and dog walkers in the area, has been used by travellers previously. This is the second illegal traveller encampment in the seaside town in recent days. Another group set up camp on the Beach Lawns[6] last week after accessing the site via one of the gated entrances.
