A354 closed in Portland after collision involving pedestrian and lorry …
The A354 is closed in Portland after a lorry collided with a pedestrian, it has been confirmed.
The Isle of Portland over the border in Dorset has effectively been cut off to motorised transport this morning after the collision blocked the only road into and out of the island.
The crash happened on Portland Beach Road, just close to Ferrymans Way, where the road from Portland reaches land at Weymouth. The crash has left the only route onto and off the Isle of Portland as the Weymouth-Portland ferry, which is a foot passenger ferry, that will only take buggies and bicycles by prior arrangement.
Traffic monitor Inrix states: “A465 Portland Beach Road in both directions closed due to accident investigation work between The Wildlife Centre (Portland) and Ferrymans Way (Weymouth).
“Road has been closed since this morning following a serious crash involving a lorry and a pedestrian.”
Traffic is already at a standstill on either side of the crash scene, leaving around 13,500 residents of the Isle of Portland without any road connection, for the time being. This is a liveblog on an ongoing situation – we will bring you updates as we get them.
