A12 shut overnight for two consecutive weekends for improvement …
The A12 is set to be shut overnight for two consecutive weekends – starting from tomorrow (August 5), for improvement works to take place. Thorought the year, the old concrete road surface of the A12 between Marks Tey and Stanway – which has reached the end of its life – will be completely removed down to its foundations before being reconstructed using recycled material from the old road and “state-of-the-art techniques.”
It will then be resurfaced with asphalt and not concrete. National Highways says this will provide smoother, quieter journeys and less need for maintenance and repair in the future. The road is expected to be open to traffic from spring next year, but has caused some disruption to motorists during its closure.
Drivers are being warned that the road will be shut this weekend and it will be the fourth of the six that are due to take place across weekends until early September as work is carried out. This weekend will be the first of two back-to-back weekend closures of the northbound Marks Tey junction as work continues on a £37 million project.
The same closure is scheduled to be in place next weekend as well. The closures and diversions will change across the duration of the weekend.
The final weekend closure of the junction is scheduled to take place from Fri 1 September (9pm) – Mon 4 Sept (5am). The southbound side of the carriageway will be unaffected.
Here are the closures and diversions across the duration of the weekend
21.00, Fri 4 Aug – 01.00, Sat 5 Aug: Full closure of the A12 northbound carriageway between J25 Marks Tey and J26 Stanway
Traffic will exit at J25 Marks Tey and travel along B1408, A1124 and rejoin the A12 at J26 Stanway
01.00, Sat 5 Aug – 00.00, Mon 7 Aug: Full closure of the A12 northbound carriageway between the J25 exit and entry slip roads
Traffic will exit the A12 at J25 exit slip, travel over the roundabout and onto the J25 entry slip road to rejoin the A12 northbound
00.00, Mon 7 Aug – 05.00, Mon 7 Aug: Full closure of the A12 northbound carriageway between J25 Marks Tey and J26 Stanway
Traffic will exit at J25 Marks Tey and travel along B1408, A1124 and rejoin the A12 at J26 Stanway
Niamh Farrell – National Highways Assistant Project Manager for the scheme – said: “We don’t want anyone queueing in congestion, so please plan your journey and allow extra time if you do need to pass through the roadworks on the northbound side of the A12 between Marks Tey and Stanway.
“We have a number of measures in place to highlight the closure to road users but we still expect to see significant congestion in the local area.
“I understand this is frustrating, but anyone who regularly drives on the A12 will know this work is much needed and the improvements we make to the road will provide real long term benefits despite the short term frustration.”
