A12 shut and man hospitalised after van crashes into bridge

A man has been rushed to hospital after a van crashed into a bridge on the A12 this morning. The incident happened on Eastern Avenue, near the junction of Pettis Lane, in Romford, where emergency services were called at about 11.55 am following reports of the collision.

London Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police, and Ambulance Service attended the scene. When emergency service workers arrived a black van was found smashed into the walkway path slope.

The driver was rescued by firefighters after being trapped in the wreckage. He was then taken to hospital for further treatment.

His condition is yet to be confirmed. MPS has confirmed road closures in the surrounding area are in place as emergency services deal with the incident.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at about 11:55hrs on Friday, 11 August to reports of a van in collision with a bridge on Eastern Avenue at the junction with Rise Park Parade in Romford. Emergency services attended. The driver was taken to hospital; we await an update on his condition.

“Road closures are in place.” An LFB spokesperson said: “Firefighters from Romford and surrounding fire stations attended a Road Traffic Collision on Eastern Avenue, near the junction of Pettis Lane.

“Crews responded to reports of a vehicle colliding with a bridge. A man was extracted from a vehicle and treated on scene by the London Ambulance Service. There are no reports of any other injuries at this time.

“The Brigade was called at 1158 and remained on scene until 1223.”
