Which train station offices are closing and what it means for rail travel
Hundreds of rail station ticket offices around the country are to close.[1]
The Rail Delivery Group, an industry body representing private railway operators, confirmed on Wednesday that up to 1,000 offices will be closed.
Some of the busiest stations in the country are set to see their ticket offices close down[2], including London Waterloo, Manchester Piccadilly and Birmingham New Street.
Passengers now have to use either the self-service machines or rail company websites.
What has been said about the closures?
Louise Rubin, from disability charity Scope, said she believes there are concerns “more people being stranded without the support they need”, while the Royal National Institute of Blind People’s Vivienne Francis said closures will affect the ability to “travel independently” for many
Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT union,[3] said: “The decision to close up to 1,000 ticket offices and issue hundreds of redundancy notices is a savage attack on railway workers, their families and the travelling public. Travellers will be forced to rely on apps and remote mobile teams. This is catastrophic for elderly, disabled and vulnerable passengers.”

However, the Rail Delivery Group denied this, saying: “No redundancy notices have been served to staff.
“Alongside public consultations, train operators have issued a letter to trade unions which opens consultation on managing the transition in a way that minimises the impact of the changes – examples include moving to a new multi-skilled role and comprehensive re-training and re-skilling, staff moving to other roles and the potential for a voluntary severance scheme.
“Train companies are committed to treating staff, who are hugely valued, fairly and will continue to engage constructively with unions at a local level to manage the transition.”
A Rail Delivery Group spokesperson added: “No redundancy notices have been served to staff.
