Weather maps show UK engulfed by rain after Met Office storm …

Terrifying weather maps have shown incoming thunderstorms and heavy rainfall which is set to batter the country.

The UK is expected to be covered in rain until 11pm tonight as the Met Office announces a an urgent warning.

A yellow warning has been issued by the weather[1] company, with people told to expect adverse conditions.

The Met Office[2] said: "There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

"Delays to train services are possible. Some flooding of a few homes and businesses possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures.

"Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes."

A yellow warning for wind has also been put in place by the Met Office until the end of the day.

It said there would likely be delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport. While short term power loss could also be a problem.

Some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities have been told they will be affected by spray from large waves.

Information on the company's website added: "Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.

"Some damage to trees or temporary structures such as marquees, tents & inflatables, could occur."

Those who are at risk of being caught in the thunderstorm are being advised to keep safe by checking if their home is at risk.

If it is, they should take steps to prepare for any possible flooding or power cuts, including charging your phones, parking your car outside the flood zone, preparing a flood kit, store vulnerables up high and turning of any gas, water or electric supplies.

The forecaster urges people to try to avoid driving in adverse weather conditions, but if they need to they should drive slow, use main roads and dipped headlights, give yourself more time between journeys and leave more space between vehicles.

In the case of a power cut people should be prepared by using candles, matches or lighters, as well as having torches, batteries and a phone power pack spare.

If you have any loose items outside your house you are also advised to try and weigh them down and prevent them from moving.
