Warehouse and distribution firm is one in a million, says MS
A warehouse storage and distribution company is on the road to more success after reaching a major milestone by handling its one millionth pallet.
McCarthy Distribution Ltd, based on Wrexham Industrial Estate, invited the city’s Senedd Member, Lesley Griffiths, to come on a visit to celebrate achieving the landmark.
The company isn’t resting on its laurels because later this summer a new £1 million extension to their Elm Point warehouse will be operational.
The increased capacity will pave the way for future growth, enabling McCarthy to store a significant number of additional pallets.
The development of the 18,000 sq ft facility is set to create 10 new jobs and follows news that the company has signed a three-year extension to a contract with global packaging giant, Wipak, which has a manufacturing base in Welshpool.
Earlier this year McCarthy became one of the first companies in the UK to receive a special certificate for retaining the British Retail Consortium Global Standards (BRCGS) accreditation for storage and distribution for 10 years on the trot.
The firm has consistently maintained the coveted AA rating every year since the grading system was brought in.
Wrexham MS Lesley Griffiths, who is also the Welsh Government’s Rural Affairs Minister, said: “This is a great company and they have increased the capacity of their warehousing with a £1 million extension to cater for the increased volume of work.
“They’re going from strength to strength and McCarthy is a wonderful Wrexham success story, illustrating once again that the city is a fantastic place to thrive and prosper.
“Handling the one millionth pallet is another significant milestone in the company’s history and is something to be applauded and celebrated.
“The other huge recent achievement was becoming one of the first warehousing companies to gain and retain AA grade BRCGS accreditation for storage and distribution for 10 years running.
“That’s a real feather in their cap and gives their customers reassurance that their products are in very safe hands.”
Reaching the landmark figure of one million pallets was a proud moment for Warehouse Manager Steve Jones who leads a 16-strong team.
He said: “It’s a big step for the company and the numbers show that we are growing year on year and I believe we’ll hit two million even more quickly.
“Our capacity will increase by a third when the new extension is ready and it means we will be able to cater for future growth.
“We have all the accreditations to back up what we’re doing and we make sure that everything here is absolutely spotless.
“Quality is right at the top of our priority list and we have an excellent team who buy into that ethos.
“What we’re providing is improved flexibility and efficiency for customers who put their trust in us to look after their warehousing. This allows them to reduce their own warehousing capacity, enabling them to be more productive and profitable.”
Managing Director Mike McCarthy said: “We’re very grateful to Lesley Griffiths finding time in her busy schedule to come and help celebrate achieving this new milestone.
“She is a great champion for the city of Wrexham and we were proud to share our achievements with her.
“There is clearly demand out there and we want to satisfy the needs of customers who require high quality warehousing and logistic solutions.
“One of our long standing customers, Wipak who are based in Welshpool, have invested in their company and they have a big growth plan which will be implemented in the second half of this year.
“A lot of credit must go to Steve and his fantastic team who are so focused on quality and are consistently delivering excellent customer service.
“That in turn helps create loyalty from our existing customers and attract new ones – it gives them great confidence because it’s very much a partnership approach.
“Trust is incredibly important and the gold standard accreditations we have provide total peace of mind.”
He added: “I am proud that we are based in Wrexham and that the city is growing, with other companies coming here to create more jobs and prosperity for the area.
“Brand Wrexham has never been so prominent. It’s a real positive for us as a local company and the fact that Wrexham is recognised on the world map is really good for business.”
