Two people taken to hospital after collision on A697 in …

Two people have been taken to hospital following a collision which has led to the closure of a rural Northumberland[1] road.

Part of the A697 was closed on Wednesday afternoon after a collision near Thrunton Fisheries. Emergency services attended along with the Great North Air Ambulance, with a woman taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle by helicopter and a child taken by road.

A Northumbria Police statement read: “At 1515 hours today police were notified of a two vehicle RTC by the North East Ambulance Service on the A697 between bridge of Aln and New Moor House Crossroads. On attendance the driver of one of the vehicles was found to have sustained potentially serious injuries and has been taken to hospital.

“The road remains closed to facilitate an ongoing investigation into the cause of the collision. Police would appeal for any with information or dashcam footage to get in touch quoting reference NP 20230726-0681.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call to 999 at 15:09 this afternoon to reports of a road traffic incident.

“Attending the scene were two of our Hazardous Area Response Teams, a Clinical Team Leader, two emergency ambulance crews and the air ambulance. One female patient has been transported to the RVI by air ambulance and a child passenger has been taken to the RVI by road.”

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that three of its appliances plus a special rescue unit were called out to the A697 at 3.20pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Northumbria Police[3] and the Great North Air Ambulance have been approached for comment.
