Two people in hospital after crashes which sparked major A55 delays
Two people were taken to hospital after a crash on the A55 in Flintshire[1] yesterday evening (July 7). The collision was soon followed by a second crash nearby, causing traffic misery for motorists.
Emergency services were called to the first collision just before 7pm, on the westbound carriageway between junction 33B for Buckley[2] and junction 33A for Northop[3]. The outer lane was closed and drivers were able to pass with care.
Around an hour later, a second crash blocked both lanes of the westbound stretch of the A55 a couple of miles on from the first incident. This was between junction 35 for Dobshill and junction 34 for Ewloe[4].
As the road was closed, North Wales Police[6] advised motorists to find alternative routes. Westbound traffic was diverted off the A55 at junction 35.
The police tweeted: “There has been a road traffic collision westbound A55[7] near to the Broughton[8] turn-off. Can motorists find an alternative route until further notice please.”
Although the first incident was quickly cleared, traffic quickly built in the area. Traffic Wales reported significant congestion on surrounding routes, both on the A55 and on the A550 towards Hawarden[9].

The Welsh Ambulance Service[11] was called to the first crash at 6.53pm. It responded by sending four emergency ambulances, an operational manager and two high-acuity response vehicles.
One casualty was taken by ambulance to Wrexham Maelor Hospital[12], another was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.
The Welsh Ambulance Service said it wasn’t called to the second incident. The A55 was finally reopened at around 10pm.
