The ‘destruction’ caused by car that drove through roadworks on A14

A video has shown destruction left behind after a vehicle drove through road works on the A12. Footage shared by National Highways shows several traffic cones scattered across the road whilst officers from the agency and local police stand nearby.

The carriageway remained partially open following the incident with traffic forced to use one lane. The mess was caused close to an exit slip road on the A12.

National Highways said the video shows “the destruction caused by a vehicle that drove into our roadworks and the delays caused by tidying up”. They added: “We want to make sure no one is harmed on our roads, including those working to maintain and improve them.”

Karl Brooks, National Highways’ local programme delivery manager, said: “Working on the strategic road network is an inherently dangerous place at the best of times, but when road users ignore barriers, signs or cones, they are entering someone else’s workspace with a vehicle, often travelling at high speed, it’s extremely dangerous.

“Safety is an absolute priority for National Highways; we want everyone to get home safe and well, and that goes for our workers too.

“We understand that nobody likes being stuck in a car and queueing through roadworks, so we plan very carefully and, where possible, carry out work overnight and at weekends when roads are at their quietest. Unfortunately, that’s not always possible and traffic management measures like cones and signs are there for the safety of the public and those working to improve the road network.”
