Stepney Bank reopens after huge sink hole appeared in the road

Repairs to fix a Newcastle road after a huge sink hole opened up have now been completed after nearly two weeks.

Stepney Bank, in Ouseburn[1], reopened on Saturday morning for the first time since a section of the road caved in earlier this month. Northumbrian Water[2] quickly began repairing the damage and it had been hoped that the road could reopen early last week.

However, the water supplier later confirmed that the repair works were "more complex and complicated than usual"[3] due to the location of the damage, resulting in a delay to when the road could reopen.

Northumbrian Water became aware of the incident after reports that some properties had been left without water on the evening of Tuesday, July 18. Workers were called to the area and discovered a burst water main and were able to restore the water supply later that evening.

The incident occurred close to a number of businesses including the Tanners Arms, Tattoo Zone and Little Buildings. And by the morning of July 19, a large section of the nearby road had been reduced to rubble.

Stepney Bank was closed to traffic to allow for repairs to take place. The road was able to reopen on the morning of Saturday, July 29.
