Speed limit through busy village could be slashed to 20mph

A new 20mph speed limit could be installed through the centre of a busy Somerset village – in a bid to make it safer. North Somerset Council is consulting on proposals to reduce the current speed[1] limit through the centre of Tickenham.

The route is a key link between Nailsea and Clevedon and onto the M5 motorway and is used by thousands of motorists[2] each day. The scheme would see the current limit in the centre of the village past Tickenham Primary School reduced from 30mph to 20mph.

There would also be new signage and road markings[3] to slow the speed of traffic. A drop in session for people to have their say is being held as part of the consultation process.

The drop in is being held on July 16 at Tickenham Village Hall from 1pm-6pm where North Somerset Council highways officers and parish councillors will be on hand to answer questions. A North Somerset Council spokesman said: “This consultation is one of the first stages of engagement with the community in Tickenham on the proposed implementation of a 20mph[5] zone.

“The scheme aims to provide a safer[6] environment for the community in the parish, specifically for school pupils, elderly persons and people moving around by foot or bike.” Feedback will be collected later this summer with the council then deciding on the next steps needed to implement the scheme.
