Spalding level crossing issues lead to more traffic problems for …

Motorists suffered delays as the result of two issues with a busy town level crossing this evening.

People leaving work in Spalding town centre ground to a halt in traffic queues when the barriers became stuck down in Winsover Road – and the matter has also impacted on rail passengers.

An eye witness reported that the barriers had failed at about 5.30pm – with the police said to be on the scene.

While the matter looked to be fixed – and the barriers lifted – by about 5.50pm, they became stuck again at about 6pm.

Traffic was heavier that usual in and around Winsover Road and Station Street as a result.

Level crossing failures have been a regular issue in Spalding – and can bring the town to a standstill – although Network Rail bosses had said they had reduced the number of problems[1] in a statement issued this year.

A team from Network Rail is said to be on the scene and has allowed the line to re-open to trains.

A statement on the National Rail website said the normal timetable on the Peterborough to Lincoln/Doncaster line is expected to return by 8pm.

It added: “Lines have reopened following a fault at a level crossing in the Spalding area earlier this evening. Trains between Peterborough and Sleaford are returning to normal but may be cancelled or delayed whilst service recovers.

“We expect this disruption to end at 20:00.”
