‘Severe’ delays amid multi-vehicle crash and holiday getaway
There are ‘severe delays’ on the M5 in Somerset after a multi-vehicle crash occurred during the weekend getaway.
Traffic monitor Inrix has confirmed the collision between Sedgemoor Services and Weston-super-Mare at around 12.20pm (July 21)
Inrix states: “Long delays and one lane closed due to multi-vehicle accident on M5 Northbound between Sedgemoor Services and J21 A370 (Weston-super-mare). Congestion to J22 (Burnham-on-sea).”
The crash comes after an earlier collsion between Weston and Clevedon, also northbound.
With schools in England and Wales breaking up for the summer, the RAC are warning drivers to expect tailbacks on a number of key routes across the region and beyond.
The RAC says the southbound stretch of motorway into Somerset, between Bristol and Bridgwater, is “one of the most important holiday routes in the country.” Delays will be longer than normal, with extra jams adding 45 minutes to journeys between junction 15 and junction 23.
Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at Inrix, added: “With millions of trips expected on the roads this getaway period, drivers should be prepared for above-average delays to their favourite destinations.
“Planning ahead, using traffic apps, and keeping tuned in to local traffic broadcasts are key to minimising frustrations this getaway period.”
The Met Office is reporting that the weather outlook for the weekend is for an unsettled period of weather to continue, with the UK under the influence of low pressure.
