Seaside hotel goes up in flames – as locals evacuated
This was the dramatic scene at an old hotel in Scarborough this morning.
This disused building when up in flames in the early hours and residents in neighbouring residential buildings had to flee for safety, our sister site Yorkshire Live reports[1].
Fifty firefighters were trying to bring the blaze under control. A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said there were no reports of casualties, but they would be unable to confirm this until the building could be searched.
Buildings on either side of the old hotel, in Belmont Road, were evacuated. The street was closed to residents and people living nearby were told to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Emergency services are at the scene of a large fire at a disused hotel in Scarborough. North Yorkshire Police was called to the incident on Belmont Road just after 1am in the early hours of Sunday July 16 .
“North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are working to extinguish the fire. As a safety precaution, buildings either side of the property have been evacuated. The road has been closed to protect members of the public and to allow emergency services to work at the scene.
“There are no reports of casualties at this time, however, until the building has been searched, this cannot be confirmed. Please avoid the area at this time. Local residents in the area of the fire should keep their windows and doors closed due to the large plume of smoke from the fire.”
