RGS Springfield’s ‘unforgettable experience’ racing eco car …
RGS Springfield’s year six pupils geared up for the build as of the school’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum.
Taking on various roles such as designers, engineers, and project managers, the budding enthusiasts worked together to design, fabricate and assemble their very own electric car.
They also visited Silverstone, where they participated in workshops and explored the renowned motor racing museum.
Once they returned to school, the inspired pupils constructed and tested their new car before the RGS Springfield Greenpower Goblin team journeyed to the race venue of Renishaw New Mills for an exhilarating race day.
Joined by 20 other regional teams, the teams competed across three race categories.
The year-long project began with the team constructing their kit car. Throughout the process, the pupils learnt a range of new skills, mastering the use of tools and optimising the vehicle to maximize its performance.
At Renishaw New Mills each team member then had the opportunity to showcase their driving skills in a drag race or navigate a challenging slalom course before the ultimate trial – a sprint race against three other cars, with the hopes of securing a place in the semi-finals and ultimately the grand finale.
The team celebrated the performance of the car and drivers – placing fifth overall out of 21 teams.
A school spokesperson said: “This remarkable project not only fostered engineering and driving skills but also cultivated resilience and teamwork among the year six pupils, providing them with an unforgettable experience.”
