Recovery vehicle driver killed in M42 crash as motorist arrested

A man has died in a crash on the M42. The incident[1] happened between junctions 10 and nine of the southbound carriageway in Warwickshire[2] in the early hours of Saturday morning (July 15).

The crash, near Tamworth[3], involved a recovery vehicle and a Ford Fiesta. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 1.40am. The driver of the recovery vehicle, a 45-year-old man, died at the scene, according to Warwickshire Police.

His next of kin have been informed. A 28-year-old man, from Leicestershire, was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and has been released on police bail.

The southbound carriageway of the M42[5] motorway was closed[6] throughout the night and the following morning as investigations were carried out. It reopened on Saturday lunchtime.

Detective Constable Ballantyne, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are urging any witnesses who may have seen either vehicle in the lead up to the collision or seen the collision itself, to please get in touch. We are currently working to establish exactly what happened.

“If anyone witnessed the collision or has any information or dashcam footage, please call Warwickshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 27 of 15 July 2023.”
