Rail barriers down again causing traffic chaos in Hull and Cotiingham

There are reports rail barriers in both Hull and Cottingham have both been stuck just as rush hour approached which caused chaos.

This is the second day in a row the barriers in Cottingham have been stuck and there was further disruption due to signal failures. On Tuesday the barriers are stuck at both Thwaite Street and also on Spring Bank West in Hull.

Motorists affected say they were stuck for an hour and that traffic has been “gridlocked”. One driver in Cottingham said: “Train lines are broken. The traffic in Cottingham is awful. Its backing right up to priory road. We need help! All of us are stuck.”

Another driver stuck at Spring Bank West said: Walton Street barriers appear to be stuck down. It is gridlocked. Cars at the front managing to reverse and head down Walton Street. I’ve contacted network rail but no expected time it will be sorted.”

East Yorkshire buses also tweeted to warn passengers of the delays: It tweeted: “The level crossings at Walton Street and Cottingham have failed. Long delays are expected in these areas.”

On Monday there were similar issues. National Rail confirmed there was disruption on the Hull to Scarborough line and warned travellers can expect delays.

It said: “A fault with the signalling system between Hull and Scarborough means trains running between these stations may be delayed by up to 20 minutes or cancelled.”

It appears the barriers are now being fixed but it may take time for traffic to return to normal. Network Rail has been contacted for comment.
