Powys councillor calls on Network Rail and council for pothole fix
Cllr Elwyn Vaughan has criticised the state of a small road in Cemmaes, leading to the workshops in Glantwymyn off the A470.
Cllr Vaughan labelled the condition of the road “disgraceful, dangerous and abusive to vehicles” while calling for either Powys County Council or Network Rail to take responsibility for repairs.
The road was first paved in 1983 on an old railway site but is in limbo, with neither one officially adopting the road, which remains unregistered with the HM Land Registry in Swansea.
For some years small potholes on the road were repaired and filled in by some of the private companies that use the route, but Cllr Vaughan is now calling for the council and the rail infrastructure operator to step up and provide overdue maintenance.
He said: “This road has always had its share of potholes but the condition has really deteriorated over the past 12 months.
“Powys Council have informed me that the road has not been adopted by them, while Network Rail have yet to provide any proof that ownership has been passed to someone else.
“What I would like to see is a meeting between the two groups, at the site, to assess what needs to be done and who should be responsible for it.
“I have asked for the support of Cefin Campbell, Member of the Senedd, to put weight on Network Rail to review it immediately. It takes a strong united voice to put weight on it.
“Network Rail are willing to spend billions on various projects across the country, so asking for a quote on the costs to resurface a small road like this is a small ask in the grand scheme of things.”
A Powys Council spokesman said: "The council is aware of the matter and is in correspondence with the local county councillor about this road, which is not listed as a public highway."
