Photos show scene of six-vehicle crash after ‘police pursuit’
The crash happened close to Weybridge town centre and shut the road for most of the day
Photos from the scene of a six-vehicle crash in Weybridge[1] after a police chase have shown at least two badly damaged cars and a lorry at the location. A man was taken to hospital after the incident and two arrests were made by Surrey Police.
A spokesperson for the police watchdog the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct) confirmed it had requested further information in relation to the incident on Saturday morning (July 15) after “police had been in pursuit of a fleeing vehicle”. The spokesperson said: “We were notified by Surrey Police this morning (Saturday, July 15) about a road traffic collision that occurred overnight.
“We were advised that police had been in pursuit of a fleeing vehicle prior to the collision. We have requested a paper referral with further information about the circumstances surrounding this incident, which we will assess in due course before deciding if any further action is required from us.”
An appeal for witnesses has been issued by Surrey Police[3], who said the collision happened around 12.40am and involved the drivers of five cars, including a silver Mitsubishi Outlander and a white Toyota Prius as well as the driver of a heavy goods vehicle. Balfour Road was closed until shortly before 6pm while emergency services responded.
A man, in his 60s, was taken to hospital and his next of kin was informed. Police have arrested two people on suspicion of a number of driving offences that include failing to stop for police and theft of a motor vehicle.
Images from the scene show a large emergency service response with police, ambulances and the fire service in attendance. Damaged cars can be seen alongside a lorry – one on its side. A queue of traffic can also be seen after a police cordon was put in place in the area.
A spokesperson for Surrey Police confirmed: “The matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as the driver of one of the cars involved previously came to the notice of the police prior to the collision. Information – including any dashcam footage – can be shared online[4], by calling 101, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111. The incident reference number is PR/ 45230078690.”
