One person injured after two crashes within an hour on busy …

Two crashes have taken place on the same road in Sunderland[1] within an hour of each other.

Two vehicles collided on Durham Road at the junction with Premier Road at just after 9.30am on Thursday morning.

Police, paramedics and firefighters all attended the scene. One person was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital[2] and the vehicles involved were recovered.

Around an hour later, at 10.38am, officers received a report of a second two-vehicle collision at the same location. Nobody was injured and the cars were recovered from the scene.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police[4] said: “At 9.37am today, we received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A690 Durham Road at the junction with the Premier Road, in Sunderland.

“Emergency services attended and no-one is believed to have been seriously injured. The vehicles involved were then recovered from the scene.

“Then, at 10.38am, we received a report of another two-vehicle collision at the same location. There were no injuries and the cars were recovered from the scene by 12.30pm.”

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS)[5] said they transported one person to hospital following the first collision.

A spokesperson said: “We were called just after 9.30 this morning to a two car road traffic collision on Durham Road, Sunderland. We dispatched a rapid response paramedic and a double crewed ambulance.

“One of our patient transport crews also stopped to assist. One patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.”

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service[6] said they attended the first collision to help bring a male driver to safety.

A spokesperson added: “We were called at 9:40am to a road traffic collision (RTC) on Durham Road in Sunderland.

“Two appliances from Farringdon Community Fire Station were on scene in just four minutes to begin assisting our blue light colleagues to bring the male driver to safety. Our crews left the scene at 9:55am.”
