Neal Skupski wins men’s doubles to claim third Wimbledon title
Liverpool tennis star Neal Skupski has won his third Wimbledon doubles title.
Skupski, 33, and partner Wesley Koolhof beat 15th seed opponents Horacio Zeballos and Marcel Granollers in straight sets in the men’s doubles final on Centre Court this afternoon (July 15). The top seed pair won 6-4, 6-4, sweeping their opponents aside with an emphatic performance.
It is Skupski’s third title at the All England Club, having won the mixed doubles in 2021 and 2022. He has become the first British player to win a hat trick of Wimbledon titles since Dorothy Round in 1937 and just the second Briton to win the Wimbledon men’s doubles in the open era.
Skupski attended King David High School in Childwall[2] and began playing tennis[3] at Allerton’s[4] Palmerston Tennis Club, which his childhood home backed onto[5]. He is now coached by older brother and former doubles partner Ken Skupski, who called time on his own playing career in 2022.
Earlier in the day, Marketa Vondrousova made history as she became the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title after beating sixth seed Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-4 in the final.
The men’s singles final will follow tomorrow, as youngster Carlos Alcaraz faces Novak Djokovic. The latter is chasing his eighth title at SW19, which would draw him level with Roger Federer.
