A historic railway site in Sheffield could be redeveloped to provide office, workshop, studio and retail space under newly submitted plans.

LRES UK Ltd, supported by DLP Planning, has submitted a full planning application to Sheffield City Council for the redevelopment of the Coal Drops on Wilson Street in Neepsend.

The site comprises the former coal drops, which were used to transfer coal from rail carts for distribution across the local area by road. These are thought to have been constructed in the latter half of the 1800s, and are currently used for storage.

Planning permission is sought for a mixed-use redevelopment of the site to create a series of units capable of being reconfigured to suit end users.

Potential uses include small shops, café, restaurant and bars, office space, workshops and artists' studios.

A rooftop restaurant and bar is also proposed, together with a garden area, and a meadow and park either side of the restaurant.

The plans also include 19 parking spaces for staff and visitors, five electric car charging ports and two disabled car parking bays.

A planning statement submitted as part of the application said: "The regeneration of a degrading site will be of benefit, creating an active site, and attractive area.

"The Class-E Uses will ensure that the units are flexible for demand, providing spaces with mezzanine levels, for offices, workspace, shops, gallery space, as well as a café and restaurant/bar, which will ensure maximum use of the site.

"Existing materials including the coal drop structure, stonework, cobbles, and weighbridge are to be retained, with proposed materials complimenting the site to retain character."
