Maps of North Wales roads that we know will be exempt from 20mph …
One of the more controversial proposals being introduced by Welsh Government in this Senedd term is the plan to introduce a default 20mph limit on most 30mph roads. It has certainly divided opinion - with the Government and road safety chiefs citing the lives it could save and opponents warning of the economic damage.
Wales will become the first country in the UK to bring in the new default speed, which will cost £33m to implement. It will come in from September.
Trials have proved controversial but Welsh Government says it has learnt from these - with councils given the freedom to exempt roads - or parts of roads - from the default limit. If these orders were not introduced parts of the A55[1] would even be slowed to 20mph on two stretches in North Wales.
Welsh Government - which manages Wales' trunk roads - has already published its list of zones which will not face 20mph limits. Maps of these can be seen below or you can
When it comes to the councils, three of the six local authorities in North Wales have so far published a list of their 'exception' zones, where 30mph limits will remain. These are Anglesey[3], Wrexham[4] and Flintshire[5].
These roads have been marked on a map created by Welsh Government to show all the excepted areas in Wales so far. Other local authorities will follow suit shortly. Here North Wales Live lists the maps from Anglesey, Flintshire and Wrexham, showing the 30mph highways that won't become 20mph zones when the new rules kick in. We also show parts of Conwy[7] and Gwynedd[8] where Welsh Government have exempted roads already.Ynys Mon/Anglesey
