A huge search was launched after a man got into difficulty in water near an Essex pier. The man was rescued from the sea near Southend Pier after Southend and Canvey Coastguard teams were called out to the water near Southend Pier on Sunday evening (July 30) following concerns for the welfare of the man.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: "A man reported to be in difficulty in the water under Southend pier was rescued by the RNLI hovercraft last evening.

"The alarm was raised at about 7.35pm. Coastguard Rescue Teams were sent from Canvey and Southend, as well as the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lydd, which sent down its winch-paramedic to assist once he was on dry land.

"The man was picked up safely by the hovercraft and taken to the RNLI station in Southend. He was taken by road to hospital by the East of England Ambulance Service. Essex Police were alerted."

Essex Police and the ambulance service both attended and secured the scene. The coastguard also shared pictures of the dramatic rescue online showing a helicopter bringing the man to shore.
