Man, 19, killed and three others stabbed in weekend of violence

A 19-year-old was stabbed to death in a shocking weekend of violence across the North West.

People living on Merseyside and beyond were horrified to hear the news of Matthew Daulby’[1]s death following a disturbance in Ormskirk town centre[2] on Saturday. The 19-year-old, from Liverpool,[3] was taken to hospital with stab wounds, but died a short time later.

A second 19-year-old man was also treated for stab injuries and he has since been discharged from hospital.

Two other unrelated incidents of knife crime were reported on Merseyside and beyond this weekend. Here’s everything we know so far about those incidents.

Air ambulance called as man stabbed on train from Liverpool

A man was airlifted to hospital after being stabbed[4] on a train from Liverpool to Birmingham.

The victim, in his 50s, was attacked at around 4pm on Friday, July 28 while he was on a train from the city to Birmingham. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening and he is in a stable condition, police said.

Rail services were temporarily disrupted around Hartford Station in Cheshire while emergency services attended. British Transport Police (BTP) said a man in his 40s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and was in custody.

In an update today, police confirmed the man who was arrested has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Two bailed as police continue to quiz man on suspicion of teenager’s murder

Ormskirk town centre became the centre of a murder investigation after Matthew Daulby was stabbed to death on Saturday.[5][6]

Officers were called to Railway Road at 12.05am to reports of an ongoing disturbance. Matthew[7], 19, was found a short distance away with stab wounds and was rushed to hospital.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the teenager died later in hospital. In a tribute, Matthew’s family described him as a “loving and funny young man with a bright future ahead of him.”

A post-mortem examination found the cause of his death was a stab wound.

A second 19-year-old man was also treated for stab injuries. His injuries were not serious and he has since been discharged from hospital, police said.

A 20-year-old man from Ormskirk was arrested in the early hours of Sunday, July 31 on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody. An 18-year-old man from Scarisbrick was arrested on Sunday, June 30 on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody.

A 19-year-old man from Liverpool[8] and a 19-year-old man from Melling, both arrested on suspicion of affray were released on bail until October 14. The arrests relate to the altercation in Railway Road, which involved a number of males.

As part of police’s ongoing enquiries, they are asking for anyone with information or CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage which could assist with the investigation to come forward

In a separate incident at around 12.50am on Sunday, police were called to a house on Townsend Avenue in Norris Green[10].

When officers arrived they found a 26-year-old man had been stabbed in the back and arm[11], and had a cut to his neck.

He was taken to hospital for treatment and is now recovering at home from his injuries. Two men reportedly fled the house party in a grey coloured Peugeot car, driven in the direction of the East Lancashire Road.

Police[12] vehicles and a cordon remained at the scene at lunchtime on Sunday. Witnesses claimed up to 15 police cars, including dog units, had arrived in the area at 1am. An investigation is underway with officers carrying out forensic, CCTV, house-to-house and witness enquiries.
