M5 crash: Severe delays after nine-vehicle pile-up leaves one …

Drivers face ‘severe’ delays on the M5 in north Somerset following reports of a nine-vehicle pile-up[1]. The crash, which took place at around 2.45pm today (July 17), has closed two lanes on the motorway between Portishead and Clevedon.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service told SomersetLive nine vehicles were involved in a crash between junctions 19 and 20[2]. Firefighters are attending the scene with Avon and Somerset Police and the South West Ambulance Service.

Motorists face delays of up to 30-minuets on the motorway following the crash. Traffic monitoring system Inrix reports further congestion through Portishead due to diverting traffic.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 14:45 to reports of a road traffic collision on the M5 southbound between Junction 19 and 20.

“On arrival, crews found a collision involving nine vehicles. Crews from Avonmouth, Portishead and Pill are currently in attendance. Firefighters are currently at the scene working with police and ambulance colleagues at the scene.”

National Highways warns of delays up to half an hour in the area. Inrix reports: “Severe delays and two lanes closed due to multi-vehicle accident on M5 Southbound from J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead) to J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way ( Clevedon ).

“Congestion to J18 Spur Road (St Brendans Roundabout) and traffic diverting away through Portishead. Lanes two and three ( of three) are closed with around 6 vehicles involved and one of them overturning.”
